From its origins as a personal choice of entertainment, to its broad and now global reach in the form of television, film, theater, and other performances, the notion of entertainment has always been about more than mere fun and games. In its most general sense, it is agreeable occupation of the mind; a diversion or amusement: The crossword puzzle is an entertaining way to spend time. To entertain is to provide amusement, but many entertainments serve other purposes: ceremony, celebration, satire.
